    International Postgraduate Research Scholarships Australia

    International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) enables international students to undertake a postgraduate research qualification in Australia and gain experience with leading Australian researchers.

    Scholarships are open to international students of all countries (except Australia and New Zealand) and are available for a period of two years for a Research Masters degree or three years for a Research Doctorate degree. The scholarship covers tuition fees and health cover costs for scholarship holders, and health cover costs for their dependants. From 2011, commencing IPRS recipients will be able to apply for an Australian Postgraduate Award.

    Objectives
    attract top quality international postgraduate students to areas of research strength in Australian higher education providers (HEP) ; and
    support Australia’s research effort.

    Eligibility
    To be eligible for an IPRS, a student must:

  • be an overseas student;
    meet international student visa requirements as specified by the DIAC, including the requirement to purchase and maintain a standard Overseas Student Health Cover policy approved by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing;

  • be commencing full-time enrolment for the first time in a HDR at a HEP in Australia that is an eligible scholarship provider in Australia;

  • be undertaking study in a subject area identified by the HEP as one of its areas of research concentration;

  • not hold a research qualification regarded by the HEP to be equivalent to an Australian Research Doctorate or, if undertaking a Research Masters, not hold a research qualification regarded by the HEP to be equivalent to or higher than an Australian Research Masters;

  • not have held an AusAID scholarship within the two years prior to commencing the IPRS;

  • not be receiving a scholarship for which course tuition is a component under any other scholarship scheme to which the Australian Government makes a substantial contribution.

    Scholarship
    330 scholarships are offered at Australian Universities (more info about the universities offering IPRS HERE). The scholarships cover the tuition fees and health costs. All IPRS recipients will be able to apply for an Australian Postgraduate Award. APA stipend rates for 2011 are $22,860 for full-time students and $12,388 for part-time students.

    Application

    Applications for a scholarship need to be made directly to a participating Universities/Higher Education Providers (HEPs) in Australia. HEPs are responsible for determining the selection process by which scholarships are allocated to applicants.

    Deadline
    The deadline varies for each university, but applications are expected between July-October each year. Applications will be made directly to Australian Universities.
