European Ombudsman Traineeships

The European Ombudsman offers a limited number of traineeships which are intended to enable the trainees to add to the knowledge and skills they have acquired during their studies by giving them practical experience. 

The Ombudsman offers traineeships to university or higher education graduates with a keen interest in European Union public administration and, in particular, in how the EU administration relates to citizens
The traineeships have a duration of a duration of one year, subject to a positive assessment of the trainee’s performance.

There are normally two training periods: one starting on 1 September and the other on 1 January each year.
The place of work can be Brussels (Belgium) or Strasbourg (France).

 

For the September 2022 traineeship period, the Ombudsman is offering traineeships in:

  • Case handling (up to 5 traineeships)
  • Digital communication (1 traineeship)

Eligible candidates

  • nationals of a Member State of the European Union or of an accession/candidate country;
  • not have benefitted, for more than eight consecutive weeks or two full months, from a previous paid traineeship or work contract in a European institution, body, agency, office, service, delegation, representation, including the office of a Member of the European Parliament or of a European political group;
  • have a thorough knowledge of one of the official languages of the EU and very good knowledge of another. The main working language of the Ombudsman’s office is English and therefore a very good knowledge of English is required;
  • candidates applying for case handling should have a degree or diploma of at least 3 years in either law, political science, European studies, or European public administration
  • candidates applying for digital communication should have a degree or diploma of at least 3 years in communication, journalism or media design, with focus on online media and/or digital marketing.

Place of work: Brussels (Belgium) or Strasbourg (France).
 

Monthly grant: trainees receive a monthly grant during the traineeship period.

IT TRAINEESHIP 2023 – Java/web developer trainee
The European Ombudsman offers the opportunity to a Java/web developer trainee to assist in the development of the Ombudsman’s Internet and Extranet sites and of internal web-based applications.
 

Required qualifications
Candidates applying should have:

  • Good knowledge of Java, Angular, and HTML5/CSS3
  • Knowledge of Hibernate, Spring, Javascript, Typescript, SQL, dotNET, C-sharp, MS Sharepoint or MS CRM Dynamics would be an advantage.
     

Eligible applicants
The applicant should:
– be a national from an EU Member State, or of an accession/candidate country;
– have a Master’s/Engineer degree in software development or be in the process of completing it. In the latter case, the traineeship can be part of their master/engineer programme;
– should not have benefited, for more than eight consecutive weeks or two full months, from a previous paid traineeship or work contract in a European institution, body, agency, office, service, delegation, representation, including the office of a Member of the European Parliament or of a European political group;
– have a thorough knowledge of one of the official languages of the EU and very good knowledge of a second one; 
– the working languages are English and/or French.

 

Monthly grant
Trainees receive a monthly grant during the traineeship period.
The grant for the Strasbourg-based trainees is approximately €1750 per month. Additionally, trainees receive a €40 monthly supplement as support for their internet connection.

Deadline: 7 November 2022, 13:00 CET.

Starting date: February/March 2023. The traineeship has a maximum duration of 12 months. A shorter duration may be agreed upon request.
