High school education
Courses abroad with Erasmus+
During your school years, you can benefit from an Erasmus+ grant to take courses at in an European school.
Two options for your stay:
- Short-term: Between 5 and 30 days
- Long-term: 30 days to 1 year.
Conditions
To participate in a period of studies abroad as a secondary school student under Erasmus+, you must:
- Be enrolled in a school with the Erasmus+ Charter,
- Ensure your study period abroad is part of your academic curriculum,
- Have a preliminary agreement signed between your home school and the host school.
Financial support
The Erasmus+ grant covers your travel and living expenses. Additional support is available for participants from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Group mobility for students with Erasmus+
As part of the Erasmus+ program, a group of at least 2 students can participate in a short-term stay abroad at another school. These trips, accompanied by their teachers, can last from 2 to 30 days.
To take part in such a program, the school must submit an application under the Erasmus+ program. More details on the website: Anefore.lu

Schuman exchange program for high school students
Luxembourg offers an inter-regional exchange program for students in grades 7, 6, 5 and 4. The Schuman program enables students to stay with a family from the Greater Region for 2 weeks (Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, and Belgium), and in turn host a student from the Greater Region for 2 weeks.
Conditions
- Live with the host family for 2 weeks;
- Be a high school student in classes 7ᵉ, 6ᵉ, 5ᵉ, 4ᵉ ;
- Be a Luxemburgish citizen;
- Leave during the indicated periods.
The application form (in French and German) must be completed by the student and submitted to the Schuman tutor at his/her high school by November at the latest.

Study year abroad
A study abroad program allows you to attend secondary school classes in a foreign country, whether within Europe or in more distant destinations like the United States, a popular choice.
Exchange students often stay with a host family, offering a full immersion experience that enhances language learning and cultural understanding.
Conditions
- Be between 14 and 18 years old (some providers require a minimum age of 15).
- Participation fees vary according to country, duration, and services included.
Here is a selection of service providers:
Academic year in America (AYA)
The Academic Year in America (AYA) program, run by the American Institute For Foreign Study Foundation, allows you to spend a school year (5 or 10 months) in a U.S. high school while living with an American host family.
Conditions
- Be aged 15 to 18.5 at the start of the program.
- Have studied English for at least 3 years. An interview and English test are mandatory to process your application.
- Complete a minimum ELTIS score of 220 (Learn more about ELTIS).
- Demonstrate genuine motivation.
- Maintain a minimum grade average of C+ in all academic subjects, including English.
- Provide a letter of recommendation from your English teacher.
Schools
The program selects high-quality high schools.
Deadlines
Submit your application by March 1st for the first semester or October 1st for the second semester.
Costs and terms
- 10-month stay: $7,600
- 5-month stay: $7,000
- These amounts are indicative and may vary according to the type of accommodation, the activities chosen and the city.

The European student card allows you to identify yourself securely at higher education establishments in the European Union and to register for their courses.
With the same student card, you can, throughout Europe :

Get your qualifications recognized
The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is a credit system developed by the European Union to compare study programs across EU countries. It facilitates the recognition of university qualifications and study periods abroad, making it easier for students to move between countries.

SUSI Scholarship
The Student Universal Support Ireland (SUS)I is Ireland’s national authority for awarding higher education and training grants. It is an established service unit that supports students by helping them finance their education. SUSI provides funding to eligible students for full-time approved undergraduate and postgraduate courses, as well as for those studying in the UK or the EU.
All students can apply as long as they meet the eligibility criteria. SUSI’s goal is to empower students and enable them to continue their education by providing financial assistance.
Eligibility criteria
To qualify, you must:
- Be a citizen of Ireland, the EU, the EEA, the UK, or Switzerland, or hold a specific residence permit issued by the Department of Justice;
- Have lived in Ireland, the EU, the EEA, the UK, or Switzerland for three of the last five years;
- Be enrolled in an approved course at a recognized institution and pursuing full-time studies;
- Have an income that meets the set thresholds.
How to apply
- Check your eligibility: SUSI’s website offers a tool to help you determine if you qualify and at what level of funding.
- Create an account: Once your eligibility is confirmed, register on the SUSI student portal.
- Submit your application: Complete the online form and upload the required documents.
- Track your application: SUSI will review your information and notify you once your application has been processed and a decision made.
EU Careers Student ambassadors
The European Personnel Selection Office (EPSO) encourages students interested in promoting career opportunities within EU institutions and agencies to become EU Careers Student Ambassadors.
As an ambassador, you will:
- Share information about careers in EU institutions,
- Organize presentations,
- Attend job fairs,
- Regularly report on your activities,
- Manage one or more social media accounts,
- Be the point of contact for any questions regarding job opportunities in the European public service.
Conditions
- Be a citizen of the European Union,
- Have excellent proficiency in English and a language of your country of study,
- Be available for the mandatory training day,
- Be enrolled and present at university for the full duration of your ambassador mission (12 months).
- Be enrolled in a partner university.
Study abroad with Erasmus+
During your studies, you can benefit from an Erasmus+ grant to take courses at a higher education institution abroad.
Studying abroad helps you strengthen your language and intercultural skills, while developing skills that go far beyond theoretical knowledge.
Duration and mobility options
- Starting from your bachelor’s degree (or equivalent), you can do a study stay abroad for a period of 2 to 12 months (provided you are in at least your second year of studies).
- You can also combine your stay period abroad with a practical internship for a total duration of up to 12 months.
- Any study period abroad can include a hybrid mobility, which combines physical mobility with a virtual component.
Conditions
To participate in a study period abroad with Erasmus+, you must:
- Be enrolled in a higher education institution with an Erasmus+ Charter,
- Include this study period in your academic programme, ensuring it contributes to your degree and personal development,
- Make sure your sending institution and the host institution sign a partnership agreement.
Financial support
- The Erasmus+ grant covers your travel and living expenses.
- The amount of the grant can vary depending on:
- The cost of living difference between your home and destination countries,
- The geographical distance between the countries.

Google Scholarship for Computer Science and Technology Students
If you’re studying computer science or technology, you can apply for a Google scholarship. This grant allows you to continue your studies at another European university for a year.
Making travel easier with the European Disability Card
To make it easier for people with disabilities to travel between European countries, the European Union is working on a reciprocal recognition system through the introduction of a European Disability Card.
Global exchange program from the University of Luxembourg
The University of Luxembourg has signed student exchange agreements with other universities, giving you the opportunity to spend a semester at a university outside the European Union.
Conditions
- be registered in a bachelor’s or master’s program at the University of Luxembourg,
- for the semester abroad, you pay only the registration fees of the University of Luxembourg, regardless of your destination university.

Summer Universities – AEGEE
The Association des états généraux des étudiants de l’Europe (AEGEE) is the largest interdisciplinary student association in Europe.
To promote cultural exchange and overcome prejudices, AEGEE organizes Summer Universities every year, lasting between 2 and 4 weeks. During these events, participants can:
- Learn a foreign language,
- Acquire technical and academic knowledge and skills,
- Take part in cultural activities like sightseeing, hiking, or folk dance classes,
- Explore concrete themes related to European integration, international politics, active citizenship, education, the environment, personal development, and more.
Conditions
- Be between 18 and 35 years old,
- Be a member of AEGEE,
- Pay the participation fee, on average €140 for two weeks, which covers accommodation and food, as well as other expenses incurred during the event;
- Cover the cost of round-trip travel.

Travel Writing Scholarships – The Reporter’s Grand
The World Nomads platform organizes an annual writing competition open to aspiring reporters from all over the world, regardless of their country of origin, as long as they are over 18 years old. Winners receive a fully funded travel scholarship to explore a country and participate in a masterclass with a renowned reporter.
Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters
Erasmus Mundus joint Masters are high-level study programmes designed and delivered by an international partnership of at least three higher education institutions from three different countries.
These master’s programmes allow you to pursue your studies or research in at least two countries different from your country of residence, offering a unique academic and cultural experience.
