Erasmus+

Internships abroad for students

During your studies, you can receive a grant from the Erasmus+ program to do an internship with a company or partner organization abroad, giving you the opportunity to gain professional experience while improving your language and intercultural skills.

Starting from your bachelor’s degree (or equivalent), you can do an internship abroad with an organization or company (excluding EU institutions and agencies) for a duration of 2 to 12 months. For an internship abroad after graduation, it must take place within one year of obtaining your diploma.

It is also possible to combine your internship with a study abroad period, including practical training, for a maximum duration of 12 months.

Any internship abroad can be organized as hybrid mobility: a combination of physical mobility with a virtual component.

Conditions

To be able to do an internship abroad within Erasmus+:

  • you must be enrolled in a higher education institution with an Erasmus+ charter;
  • your internship abroad must be in relation with your studies, useful for your personal development and be part of your study program;
  • your sending institution and hosting organization must sign a partnership agreement.

Financial Support 

The Erasmus+ grant covers your travel and living expenses. However, the amount may vary for certain reasons: the difference in living costs between your country and the destination country, the distance between the countries… The grant amounts are published in the Erasmus+ program guide..

Additional financial aid can be granted to disadvantaged interns or interns with physical or mental disabilities or health issues

Procedures 

First, get information from the international relations office of your institution to know your opportunities within Erasmus+. Note that the procedures must be done at least 1 year in advance.

Internships abroad for hig school students

During your schooling, you can receive a grant from the Erasmus+ program to do an internship abroad with a company or organization .

Duration of stay:

  • short-term (10 to 29 days);
  • long-term (30 days to 1 year).

Conditions

To do an internship abroad as a secondary school student within Erasmus+:

  • you must be enrolled in a school with an Erasmus+ charter;
  • your internship abroad must be part of your study program;
  • your sending institution and the hosting organization must sign an agreement.

Financial Support 

The Erasmus+ grant covers your travel and living expenses. Additional support is provided for disadvantaged participants.

Internships abroad for vocational training students 

During your vocational training, you can receive a grant from the Erasmus+ program to do an internship with a company or organization in Europe.

  • Short-term (14 to 30 days) for training within a VET institution or company;
  • Long-term (1 month to 1 year) for training within a VET institution or company.

Conditions

To be able to do an internship abroad within Erasmus+:

  • You must be enrolled in a school with an Erasmus+ charter;
  • Your internship abroad must be part of your study program;
  • Your sending institution and the hosting organization must sign an agreement.

Digital Opportunity Internships

The Digital Opportunity program within Erasmus+ allows students and recent graduates to gain practical digital experience in a company. Internships take place in the digital field, such as cybersecurity, database management, web design, machine learning, quantum technologies or software development.

Conditions 

  • Internships last between 2 to 12 months;
  • Applications are made before the end of your studies;
  • During your internship, you receive a stipend of about €500 per month, but the exact amount depends on the country and the duration of the internship. This amount can be supplemented by the company;
  • You must be a student at a university participating (or be graduated for less than 1 year) in the Erasmus+ program or those associated with the Horizon 2020 program.

Advantages of an internship abroad

  • Gain practical experience in a profession;
  • Enhance your skills;
  • Develop your personal and interpersonal skills;
  • Practice a foreign language;
  • Discover a new cultural context. 

For students, an ideal time for an internship abroad is at the end of the Bachelor’s degree. This can help you find a specialization for further studies. Another good moment is after having completed your studies to complement and enhance your training. 

Finding the right internship abroad is not easy. You need to start at least six months in advance, in order to prepare your project properly.

Before starting your search, consider:

  • determining your expectations for the internship;
  • looking at which destination could be interesting concerning your studies and expectations. Note that internship conditions vary by country;
  • evaluating your language proficiency in the chosen country;
  • planning how to finance your stay;
  • writing a CV and a cover letter in the language and according to the practices of the chosen country. To increase your chances, you can post your CV online on a site like ErasmusIntern.org.

Internships with EU Institutions

All European institutions offer paid internships for undergraduate students or higher. Some institutions recruit specific profiles, while others are more open. Most internships last between 3 and 5 months.

Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs

Work 

European and international organizations offer numerous opportunities for students and young professionals who want to work internationally, develop skills, and gain experience.

Internships 

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs offers students enrolled in higher education (minimum in the 2nd year) the opportunity to do an internship with a Luxembourg institution or a diplomatic representation.

The duration of the internship varies between several weeks to 6 months, or more, if the internship is agreed upon for a period of 2 years. The internship is only paid from a minimum duration of 4 weeks on.

Conditions

  • Be a student in the 2nd year at a European university;
  • Send a cover letter in French (PDF, Word) to stagiaires.etudiants@mae.etat.lu, and you have to specify the direction the embassy or permanent representation where you want to do your internship.

Internships for future scientists

The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE) manages a network that helps students find paid internships worldwide.

Conditions 

  • Be a student in engineering, mathematics, computer science, or other scientific disciplines, or at any university level;
  • Master English;
  • Be available for 8 to 12 weeks.

For more information contact the national IAESTE office in your country. Unfortunately, Luxembourg does not yet have an IAESTE office.

Legal internships

The largest European law students’ association, ELSA, allows its members to gain professional experience abroad through its Student Trainee Exchange Programme (STEP).

Internships take place in law firms, in-house legal departments, courts, government organizations, and non-governmental organizations within the European Union and beyond.

Conditions 

  • Be a law student;
  • Be a law graduate.
  • Be an ELSA member ( if you are not a member you will pay application fees).

Some internships are paid, but not all. If the internship is unpaid, accommodation and/or meals are usually covered. For more information, visit the ELSA website.

Internships in teaching, marketing, or IT (AIESEC)

The International Association of Students in Economic and Commercial Sciences (AIESEC) is the largest student association in the world. It can help you find an internship abroad in teaching, marketing, or IT. AIESEC internships last between 6 weeks and a year and can take place in a company or a non-governmental organization.

Conditions

  • Be a student or recent graduate;
  • Be registered on the official webiste
  • Be accepted by AIESEC as an exchange participant.
